Status at New Ireland. New record; previously misidentified from Drei Inseln Harbour, New Hanover as Pranesus pinguis vaigiensis (non Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) by Munro (1958: 157); reported from Steffen Strait and Kavieng, New Ireland as Pranesus pinguis [non Lacepède (ex Commerson, 1803] by Kailola (1975: 65). KFRS material.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Philippines and New Guinea east to Solomon Islands, south to northern Australia. Pelagic, schooling along sandy shorelines and reef margins, 0–4 m depth. Transitional water and marine.
