Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a school photographed by Serge Andréfouët off the southern tip of Bauddisson Island, Kavieng District , St. KVG15, on 17 Aug. 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, Indo-West Pacific: South and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Caroline Islands ( Micronesia), Mariana Islands and Samoa, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia and to New Caledonia. Schooling in estuaries or freshwater streams, occasionally in coastal waters, 1–10 m depth. Freshwater, transitional water, marine.
