Status at New Ireland. New record, based on a video of a specimen taken in Steffen Strait, western Kavieng District at 3–18 m depth, St. KR68, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell); a specimen observed south of Nemto Island, New Hanover, 1–12 m depth, St. T24, on 7 Nov. 2006, by Gerald R. Allen.
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Philippines and Vanuatu, north to Ryukyu Islands and southern Japan, south to northern Australia. Solitary on sheltered coastal reefs, in lagoons and on exposed offshore reefs, 1–12 m depth. Marine.
