Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Hanover as Choerops anchorago by Peters (1877: 843). Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005, and by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Indonesia east to Yap ( Caroline Islands), Palau and New Guinea, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Queensland ( Australia) and New Caledonia. Solitary, in seagrass, sand and rubble areas near sheltered coral reefs, 1–25 m depth. Marine.
