Status at New Ireland. New record, based on photograph taken on 1 June 2013 during ACIAR Aquarium Survey in Kavieng District (see Teitelbaum et al. 2013: 15); 2 specimens photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 22 Feb. 2008; a video of a specimen taken off southeastern New Hanover , at 6–21 m depth, St. KR 124, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Andaman Sea and Indonesia east to Marshall Islands and Samoa, north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to northern Australia and Lord Howe Island. Found in mixed sand, rubble and coral habitats near coral reefs, 2–32 m depth. Marine.
