Acanthurus triostegus (Linnaeus 1758) —Convict surgeonfish

Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Hanover by Peters (1877: 835); reported from St. Mathias by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 75). ZMH material. A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island, Kavieng District, 1 m depth, by Dean Tully on 22 Sept. 2012.

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Panama, north to southern Japan and Ogasawara Islands, south to Lord Howe, Kermadec, Rapa and Ducie islands. Found in lagoon and seaward reefs with hard substrate; juveniles abundant in tide pools, 0–90 m depth. Marine.
