Status at New Ireland. First recorded from New Hanover as Tetrodon hispidus  by Peters (1877: 853). A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island by Dietmar Amon on 13 June 2010. another at 5 m depth by Dean Tully on 15 Sept. 2012  .

Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East and South Africa, Madagascar and western Mascarenes east to Panama, north to southern Japan, Ogasawara and Hawaiian islands, south to Lord Howe and Rapa islands. Found in seaward coral reef slopes, inner reef flats and lagoons; juveniles in seagrass areas including estuaries, 1–50 m depth. Transitional water and marine.
