Cryptangium verticillatum (Spreng.) Vitta , comb. nov.

= Scleria leptocladia Poepp. & Kunth (1837: 355) syn. nov. ≡ Cryptangium leptocladium (Poepp. & Kunth) Boeckeler (1874: 420) ≡ Lagenocarpus strictus (Kunth) H. Pfeiffer var. leptocladius (Poeppig & Kunth) H. Pfeiffer (1922: 89) . Type:—Prope Colares, ad ostia fl. Amazonum, locis arenosis, inundatis, Poeppig (no original material found). Neotype (designated here):— BRAZIL. Pará: Vigia, ca. 9 km southeast of Vigia along highway (PA-140) to Belém., 13 March 1980, G. = Cryptangium ciliatum Boeckeler (1890:28) syn. nov. ≡ Lagenocarpus ciliatus (Boeckeler) H. Pfeiffer (1921: 131) . Type:— Brasil, prov. Rio de Janeiro, A. F. M. Glaziou 16532. Lectotype (designated here): P 00130063!; isolectotypes P 00272697!, C 10010534!.

Nees (1842: 164) placed Fuirena verticillata Sprengel in the synonymy of Cryptangium uliginosum Schrad. ex Nees , nom. superfl.: [“ Fuirena verticillata Spr. Nov. Prov. 46. Schult. Mant. II. 36 et Herb. (exempl. originale)] indicating that he saw the type specimen of F. verticillata . Nees (1842: 167) also mentioned the binomial Fuirena verticillata in the synonymy of Lagenocarpus rigidus (Kunth) Nees (“ Fuirena verticillata Spr. Nov. Prov. 46 in Herb. Reg. Berol. nec nov. Prov.”). Therefore, as already noticed by Koyama & Maguire (1965: 50) Nees probably examined two specimens designated by Sprengel as Fuirena verticillata , one at Halle (Sprengel’s private herbarium, transferred to B only in 1851) and one at Berlin. Boeckeler (1874) placed Fuirena verticillata Sprengel in the synonymy of Cryptangium uliginosum Schrad. ex Nees (“ Fuirena verticillata C. Spreng herb. ”) indicating that he also examined the type material, already deposited at Berlin. Pfeiffer who worked on Lagenocarpus s.l. in the 1920’s did not mention specimens of Fuirena verticillata in any work (cf. Pfeiffer 1921, 1922, 1924) and there is a possibility that the type material was lost before Pfeiffer could examine it. Sprengel referred Otto as the collector of Fuirena verticillata [“ habitat in Brasilia, Otto ” ( Sprengel 1818: 47)]. The herbarium and types of Christoph F. Otto were deposited in B and were destroyed in the 1943 bombing ( Stafleu & Cowan 1985). Besides this, he did not collect in Brazil or even in the neotropics (cf. Urban 1906, Stafleu & Cowan 1985). Since Otto was a curator at B, he probably sent the material to Sprengel. We did not locate the original material of Fuirena verticillata , and a neotype has been chosen based on a plant that fits Sprengel’s original description and collected in a place extensively visited by 19 th Century naturalists.

Sprengel (1828) described Fuirena weigeltii based on a material collected by C. Weigelt at Suriname. Boeckeler (1874) examined the original material at B, which was destroyed later, and placed the taxon in the synonymy of Cryptangium leptocladium (Poepp. ex Kunth) Boeckeler. The holotype could not be traced and, as neotype, we choose a collection from the savannas south of Paramaribo where the original material was probably collected.

The original material of Scleria stricta collected by F. Sellow was originally at B and is no longer extant. Lectotypes were found at HAL, P and K and a lectotype which is in very good condition was selected from HAL.

Scleria leptocladia was described based on a material collected by E.F. Poeppig. The original material was examined by Ness (1842: 164), was at B (F photo), is no longer extant and no isotypes were found. We choose a neotype very close from the type locality at Vigia in the State of Pará, Brazil and which fits the protologue .

Steudel (1855) described Scleria hostmannia and cited Hohenacker 238a as the collector whereas the collector was F.W.R. Hostmann. R.F. Hohenacker only edited the plants as exsiccatae as seen in the labels. There are 3 sheets of Hostmann 238a at P and we selected the most complete material as lectotype.

There are 3 specimens of Glaziou 16532, two at P and one at C. The material chosen as the lectotype of Cryptangium ciliatum is well preserved and has more ramets with flowers and fruits than the others.

Saint-Hilaire (1833) described with details Scleria albo-nigra in the first volume of his “Voyage dans le district des diamans”. We have examined three specimens of the material collected by him and we have chosen the best preserved as the lectotype.

Boeckeler (1896), in the protologue of Cryptangium insigne , cited Glaziou 18597, 20061 and 20062 as syntypes. We have examined 15 specimens of these collections and we have chosen a lectotype which fits the original description and has the great number of ramets and intact inflorescences.

The type specimen at B examined by Boeckeler was destroyed and we have chosen the isotype at C as lectotype which is well preserved, has two individuals, and fits the original description. The material at C has a label verified by T. Koyama which indicates that he erroneously considered it as the holotype since there is no indication or annotation that the material was examined by Boeckeler.
