SCARABATERMITINI Nikolajev, 1999 View in CoL sensu novo
= Ivieolini Howden and Gill 2000: 315 View in CoL , syn. n.
Type genus
Scarabatermes Howden, 1973, p. 29 View in CoL , designated by Nikolajev, 1999, p. 175.
Diagnosis
Body usually straight ( Trachycrusus with a more robust body), no capacity for complete conglobation (incomplete conglobation in Trachycrusus ); integument depigmented and less sclerotised ( Xenocanthus with a dark integument); labium with 2 or 3 palpomeres; antenna with 8 or 9 antennomeres; pronotum usually convex anteriorly, median posterior area delimited by a sulcus or impression (less evident in Trachycrusus ); legs long and slender ( Trachycrusus with flat and wide tibiae); procoxa vertically disposed; abdomen with sternites poorly sclerotised, widely membranous, can exhibit physograstry in some species ( Scarabaeinus , Scarabatermes , Balleriolus howdeni sp. n.).
According to the classification proposed in the present study, the tribe Scarabatermitini sensu novo comprises 10 species across six genera (see Table 1 View Table 1 ).
Ivieolus genus group
The genera of the Ivieolus group can be distinguished from other genera of Scarabatermitini by: clypeal margin even, not serrated, briefly medially arcuate or shallowly emarginated. Eye large; eye-canthus extending about half length of eye. Anterior area of labrum, mandibles and maxillary palpus extending beyond clypeus anterior margin. Antennae with 8 antennomeres, scape longer than funicle, club composed by 3 antennomeres. Median posterior area of pronotum with a large and deep inverted U or V-shaped sulcus delimiting the pseudoscutellum. Abdomen poorly sclerotised, capable of expansion. Legs long and slender, protibia with 2 acute distal teeth on outer margin.
The diagnostic characteristics of the group are a modification of the diagnosis of the tribe Ivieolini syn. n., provided by Howden and Gill (2000).
The Iveolus genus group includes the genera Balleriolus gen. n. (two species) and Iveolus (three species).
