Distribution: California coastal ranges from N of San Francisco Bay to N part and S tip of Baja California; Santa Catalina Isl.
Conservation: U.S. ESA – Endangered as S. o. relictus; IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Subgenus Otisorex . Genetically related to S. vagrans ( Demboski and Cook, 2001) . Reviewed by Owen and Hoffmann (1983, Mammalian Species No. 212), who recognized 9 subspecies.
