Baccha cryptica Hull, 1942  .— Hull, 1942 a: 97. Type locality: Paraguay, Villarica. Holotype male MCZ. Hull, 1949 a: 149 (redescription), 216 (fig. 121, male abdomen).

Ocyptamus crypticus  . Thompson et al., 1976: 15 (catalog citation).

Male. Head: Dark brown to black. Face pale on lateral ⅓. Lunule usually pale above antennal insertion, central macula distinct and narrowly connected to frontal triangle color. Frontal triangle entirely black but sometimes pale laterally on ventral ¾, pale areas sometimes faded, with silvery-white pollen restricted to lateral triangular spots, but connected to the pollen from the face by ventral-dorsal oriented pollen. Vertical triangle with 1 row of pile; ocellar triangle separated by its length from posterior eye margin. Eye contiguity slightly longer than vertical triangle length. Eye with sub-triangular indentation positioned slightly dorsal to level of antenna insertion.

Antennal insertions confluent, ventral margin with short dorsal extension. Dorsal ¼ of occiput with 2 rows of simple black pile, anterior row with very short pile; middle ½ with 2–3 rows of scale-like white pile, anterior rows shorter and pile sometimes simple and black dorsally; ventral ¼ with 2 rows of scale-like white pile, anterior row slightly shorter.

Thorax: Scutum dark brown to black, mainly dull brown-pollinose with inconspicuous pair of sub-median vittae of concentrated pollen visible from a posterior view; scutum white pilose, with longer pile on notopleuron, and with distinct anterior row of shining white pile with shorter pile in the middle. Scutellum dark brown to black, with mainly short black pile intermixed with some longer white pile or mainly with long white pile (variation), subscutellar fringe pile normal to long (variation) and white. Pleuron white pilose and mostly black, except for small pale area on posterior ½ of the posterior anepisternum and dorso-posterior portion of katepisternum. Plumula long and white. Calypter yellow with apical ½ of medial pile on ventral lobe brown or entirely white (variation). Halter light yellow.

Wing: With dark anterior margin extending posteriorly on the middle, hyaline baso-posteriorly and apically (dark on cells bc, c, sc, r, basal ¾ of r 1, basal ⅔ of r 2 + 3, diffusely on basal ⅓ to ½ of r 4 + 5, bm, and basal ½ to 4 / 5 of dm, diffusely dark on apical ½ of cu p and most of cua 1), entirely microtrichose; alula brown on anterior ½ or mostly hyaline (variation), large, basally 1.5 times to apically 4.5 times as broad as c cell, entirely microtrichose.

Legs: Proleg dark brown, profemur sometimes light brown, basal ½ of protibia pale. Mesoleg dark brown, basal ½ to ⅔ of mesotibia pale. Metaleg dark brown, white on apical 2 / 5 to ½ of metabasitarsomere and other metatarsomeres, rarely 5 th metatarsomere slightly orange.

Abdomen: Dark brown; 3.8 times as long as thorax. First tergite with long white pile. Second tergite long, length 5 times minimum width, sometimes pale on baso-lateral ⅔; 2 nd tergite with subapical central triangular region of dull black pollen, and with black, short and appressed pile, except with long, erect and white pile on basolateral ⅔. Third tergite trapezoidal and long, length 3.4 times minimum width, entirely dark, sometimes with weak baso-lateral triangular maculae and median small vittate pale maculae; 3 rd tergite with large central triangular region of dull black pollen, and with short, appressed and black pile, except sometimes white baso-laterally (variation). Fourth tergite sub-quadrate, sometimes slightly longer than wide (variation); remaining characteristics as on 3 rd. Fifth tergite rectangular and wide, median vittate spots longer; remaining characteristics as on 4 th. Genitalia: Cercus with 1 regular row of pile on medial margin and 2 irregular rows on lateral margin. Surstylus directed apicoventrally, lanceolate or oval (variation) in lateral view, with weak setulae (around 18) on ventroapical ⅓, sometimes with stronger and more homogenously distributed setulae on apical ½ (variation), homogenously pilose on the dorsal surface or more concentrated on basal ½ (variation). Subepandrial sclerite subquadrate, with small medial notch on posterior margin. Hypandrium with ventral notch extending to anterior ½. Phallapodeme wide, well sclerotized throughout and tapering posteriorly. Distiphallus smooth and anterior surface curving gently towards apex. Postgonite with few short pile on ventral surface, ventral surface straight, lateral surface slightly expanded ventrally or not at all (variation), dorsal surface slightly concave with slight convexity subapically or not (variation); postgonite apex convex anteriorly, with convex ventral extremity and acute dorsal extremity.

Female: Similar to male except: Pollen connecting maculae from frons to face mostly in the same orientation. Ocellar triangle ~ 2 times its length from posterior eye margin and ~ 1.5 ocelli-width from lateral eye margin. Frons sometimes slightly lightened laterally but not greatly extended and with dull brown pollen dorso-medially. Vertex narrow. Wing less extensively dark (only basal 3 / 5 on r 1, basal ⅓ of r 2 + 3, base of r 4 + 5, basal ⅓ of dm, distinctly on apical ⅓ of cu p and basal ½ of cua 1). Second abdominal tergite shorter, length 3.3 times minimum width. Third abdominal tergite shorter, length 2 times minimum width. Sixth segment conical normal, slightly shorter than its smallest width and shorter than the 5 th. Genitalia: 7 th tergite with convex anterior margin, basal extensions ⅓ the length of the 6 th segment; 7 th segment lateral sclerite triangular, narrow on anterior extremities, with short acute baso-ventral extremities. Eighth tergite unsclerotized medially appearing as a pair of sclerites, apices narrow, basal crest short; 8 th sternite widely unsclerotized medially.

Length. 13–15mm; wing 10–11.5mm.

Distribution. Brazil (Goiás, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo), Paraguay (Guairá).

Comment: The variants always have an entirely dark frons/frontal triangle, very distinct dark regions on basal ½ of r 4 + 5 and apical ¼ of cell cu p, and a phallapodeme that usually joins the base of the basiphallus close to the level of the base of the postgonite.
