Didymoglossum ovale E.Fourn., Bull. Soc. Bot. View in CoL France 19: 240. 1872.
= Trichomanes ovale (E.Fourn.) Wess.Boer, Acta Bot. Neerl. View in CoL 11: 296. 1962.
Range: —Lesser Antilles; southern Mexico to Colombia, Venezuela, and Suriname; eastern and central Brazil to Bolivia (SC).
Ecology: —Rare, but probably also overlooked among mosses; epiphytic or saxicolous in humid forests, in Bolivia known only from damp ravines in Precambrian sandstone massifs; to 800 m.
Notes: —Leaves are tiny, 3–8 × 2–6 mm, blades entire, blade margins with stellate trichomes; sori partially exserted, usually one per blade, and soral lips with several rows of dark cells.
Didymoglossum punctatum (Poir.) Desv., Mém. Soc. Linn. Paris View in CoL 6: 330. 1827, subsp. sphenoides (Kunze) A.R.Sm. & M.Kessler View in CoL , comb. nov.
Basionym: Trichomanes sphenoides Kunze, Linnaea View in CoL 9: 102. 1834.
= Trichomanes punctatum Poir. subsp. sphenoides (Kunze) Wess.Boer, Acta Bot. Neerl. View in CoL 11: 301. 1962.
Range: —Greater Antilles; Guatemala; Costa Rica to Venezuela and Bolivia (BE, CO, LP, PA, SC).
Ecology: —Locally moderately common; epiphytic, mostly on tree trunks, often forming dense mats on one tree and absent on adjacent trees, in humid forests; to 1100 m.
Notes: —Four subspecies have been recognized, three of them in northern South America ( Wessels Boer 1962). Leaves of subsp. sphenoides are up to 15 mm long, the blades round to ovate, entire to shallowly lobed, with stellate marginal hairs; blades lack a distinct medial costa, and the veins and veinlets crowded (5 or fewer rows of cells between adjacent veins).
Didymoglossum reptans (Sw.) C.Presl View in CoL , Hymenophyllaceae (Presl) View in CoL 23. 1843 [ Abh. Königl. Böhm. Ges. Wiss., ser. 5, 3: 115. 1843].
= Trichomanes reptans Sw., Prodr. View in CoL 136. 1788.
Range: —Greater Antilles; southern Mexico to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, SC), Argentina, and Brazil.
Ecology: —Fairly common; epiphytic and on wet, mossy rocks, in humid forests; 1250–2750 m.
Notes: —See Didymoglossum krausii , a close relative, for differences.
