Bhatti (1969) separated roonwali from Hyalopterothrips and placed it in a new genus Alathrips based on the following characters: Antennal segment I with two dorsal apical setae; non split abdominal tergite X; numerous setae (15–19) on lower vein of fore wing; male with numerous small and rounded pore plates on sterna III–VII and absence of thorn-like setae on tergite IX; In contrast, Hyalopterothrips antennal segment I without dorsal setae at apical margin; abdominal tergite X completely split; fore wing lower vein with only four setae; male with tergite IX with two pairs of short stout thorn-like setae and sternites III–V or VI each usually with a transverse and two rounded pore plates. The genus Alathrips may be related to Trichromothrips genus-group based on presence of dorsoapical medial setae on antennal segment I; absence of spinula on metathorax; male with multiple rounded pore plates on sternites III–VII and antennae not sexually dimorphic. However, it can be differentiated by the head not constricted behind compound eyes; ocellar setae III situated outside the ocellar triangle; abdominal terga II–VII with S3–S5 setae not arranged in straight line along lateral margin; male without drapanae at abdominal segment IX.
