Polytremis flavinerva hainana Gu & Wang, 1997: 324 . (Type locality: Hainan, China) Scobura youngi Devyatkin, 2004: 62 , syn. nov. (Type locality: Tianjingshan, Guangdong, China)

Diagnosis

Forewing length 21.5– 23 mm. Forewing upperside cell spots conjoined, lower one slightly larger and produced toward base, spot in space CuA1 wider, produced toward base; hindwing with 3 spots, the one in space M3 dot-like.

Male genitalia ( Figs. 53−57 View FIGURES 53 − 57 ): Resembles S. lyso , but dorsal side of valva convex; ventrodistal process shorter than half length of valva.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 58 View FIGURE 58 ): Papillae anales irregularly rectangular in shape, sclerotized and covered with hairs; apophysis posterioris slender and long; anterior lamella U-shaped centrally; posterior lamella triangular with upper margin straight, central area with a deep gap; ductus bursa short, membranous, bursa copulatrix elongate, membranous.

Remarks

A male specimen from Hainan was misplaced in the genus Polytremis and described as a new subspecies of P. flavinerva . We examined this specimen and compared it to the type of hainana . Its palpi, wing pattern and male genitalia show that it belongs to the genus Scobura but differs from all the known species of the genus. Externally it resembles S. lyso , but can be distinguished from it by the following characters: forewing upperside with cell spots conjoined, spot in space CuA2 wider; hindwing with dot-like spot in space M3. Male genitalia with dorsal side of valva distally convex, ventrodistal process shorter than half the length of valva. Based on these characters, this skipper should be assigned to Scobura and raised to the species level: S. hainana ( Gu & Wang, 1997) .

Young (1996) reared Scobura larvae from Tianjinshan, Guangdong Province, and obtained 2 male specimens, which were identified as S. coniata (Hering) . In his revision of the S. coniata species complex, Devyatkin (2004) described S. youngi as a new species on the basis of the two males reared by Young. Based on the original description and illustrations, youngi has the following character states: forewing cell spots conjoined, the lower one produced toward base; spot in space 2 (CuA1) elongate, produced toward base; hindwing spot in spaces 4-5 (M1-M2) rounded, spot in space 3 (M3) dot-like, spot in space 2 (CuA1) elongate; male genitalia: cuiller (harpe) distally rounded, much shorter 1/2 the length of clasp. These features and male genitalia are identical to those of S. hainana ( Gu & Wang, 1997) , whose type speciemen was examined in the present study. According to the original description, S. youngi is smaller (forewing length = 19 mm), but this is likely due to artifical rearing. Therefore, S. youngi is considered a synonym of S. hainana . Female adult ( Figs. 17−18 View FIGURES 1 − 24 ) and female genitalia ( Fig. 58 View FIGURE 58 ) are illustrated for the first time.
