Gabronthus Tottenham 1955: 178  . Type species: Gabrius maritimus Motschulsky, 1858  , by original designation.

Notes: There are 52 valid species of Gabronthus  distributed worldwide, but only three of them have been reported from the Neotropical region (Caribbean islands), all of them as adventive species ( Frank 1983, Peck 2005). The current concept of the genus is that of Smetana (1995: 478).

Distribution: Europe, Turkey, Canary Is., Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Yemen, Ethiopia, Namibia, South Africa, Mauritius, Réunion, Rodriguez, Japan, Taiwan, Ryukyu Is., Oriental; adventive in Cuba. Notes: as Philonthus ( Gemminger and Harold 1868: 594)  ; comb. nov. ex Philonthus ( Tottenham, 1955: 185)  ; Cuba ( Peck 2005).

Gabronthus mgogoricus Tottenham 1955: 185  . Type locality: Rhodesia: Mashonaland, Salisbury. Type depository: BMNH HT ♂, 23 PT. Distribution: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Tanzania; adventive in Jamaica, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Virgin Is., USA (se). Note: Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, USA, originally from Africa ( Peck 2005).

Notes: comb. nov. ex Philonthus ( Tottenham 1955: 183)  ; distribution, also within Mexico ( Navarrete-Heredia et al. 2002), Lesser Antilles ( Peck 2011a: Northern Leeward Is., Peck et al. 2014: Guadeloupe Archipelago).
