Hesperus Fauvel 1874: 200 . Type species: Staphylinus rufipennis Gravenhorst 1802 , designated by Lucas (1920: 324).
= Onthostygnus Sharp 1884: 392 . Type species: Onthostygnus fasciatus Sharp, 1884 , designated by virtual monotypy (second species described in 1885). Note: as new synonym of Hesperus Navarrete-Heredia et al. (2002: 338) .
Notes: Among the 209 valid species currently known for the globally distributed genus Hesperus , only 10 of them have been recorded from the Neotropical region. Eight of these species were cited from South America and never revised after their original description. As it happens with other species-rich genera of Philonthina , there is broad consensus on the non-monophyly of Hesperus ( Schillhammer 2002, 2016; Li & Zhou 2011; Chani- Posse 2014a). Furthermore, the so-called Hesperus complex appears to be a rather basal group of Philonthina , far from the Neotropical lineage ( Chani-Posse et al. 2018). The current concept of the genus is that of Smetana (1995: 489).
