Hyponomeuta horologa Meyrick, 1935: 556 View in CoL

Type locality: D.R. Congo: Kivu, Lulenda .

Redescription of adult ( Plate 4). Wingspan 20–25 mm. Head white, labial palpus black with white on outer part of segments 2 and 3; scape white with a black band distally, flagellomeres weakly annulate white and blackish. Thorax white with four black spots, tegula white, with black anterior mark. Forewing with costa somewhat arched, white with an array of black spots, a short row near costa, a subcostal row, a subdorsal row and a scattering of spots between these last two, terminal fringe white. Hindwing grey, fringe concolorous. Abdomen pale grey, each segment white-edged.

Male genitalia ( Plate 13). Uncus gently concave, socius curved towards each other, tegumen with lateral flaps perhaps representing gnathos, transtilla with broad hooks; valva regularly curved, distally, saccus more than half length of valva. Aedeagus long, slender and curved, a weak cornutus towards apex.

Female genitalia ( Plate 23 View PLATE 23 ): Sternum 8 sclerotised and shaped around ostium, lamella postvaginalis comprising two large lobes, ostium small, antrum conical, short and narrow, ductus bursae narrow, almost as long as abdomen, more densely scobinate near corpus, corpus bursae ovate, signum a large spinose plate with a tapered dentate plate arising from it at right angles.

Diagnosis. Similar to many other Yponomeuta spp. having a pattern of black spots on a white background but distinguished by the comparatively broad wings and arched costa. The female genitalia have a very distinct appearance on account of the sclerotised sternum 8 and large lamella postvaginalis lobes.

Biology. Not known. Adults recorded in October and November.

Distribution. D.R. Congo, Rwanda, Uganda.

Type material. Holotype ♂ Kivu, MRAC (not examined).
