Hyponomeuta perficitellus Walker, 1863: 531
Hyponomeuta perficitellis; Janse (1917: 199) View in CoL (misspelling)
Trisophilta pauli Viette, 1967: 291 syn. nov.
Type locality: Republic of South Africa: Kwazulu Natal
Redescription of adult ( Plate 3). Wingspan 16–30 mm. Head white, labial palpus black but white around intersegmental joints; scape white becoming black distally, flagellum white for first five flagellomeres, then blackish with faint annulation. Thorax white with two black spots and black at anterior and posterior extremes; tegula white, marked black on the front. Forewing white with 5 rows of black spots, the spots tending to be elongated in a transverse direction, especially those near the dorsum; terminal fringe white. Hindwing grey, fringe paler. Abdomen grey, legs black but white on each joint. Specimens from Yemen are smaller (16–20mm) and their genitalia are proportionately smaller too.
Male genitalia ( Plate 11 View PLATE 11 ). Uncus bluntly pointed, socius with apex broadened and bluntly pointed, valva with costa concave, a small spine on terminal edge, saccus with a clubbed end.
Female genitalia ( Plate 21 View PLATE 21 ). Lobes of lamella postvaginalis gently curved, ostium small, ostial chamber almost cylindrical then abruptly contracted into ductus, ductus longer than abdomen, corpus bursae ovate, signum cruciform with short spines on transverse section.
Diagnosis. The species is distinguished by the conspicuous spots being elongated in a direction across each forewing and in the male genitalia the small spine on the edge of the valva can be seen without dissection.
Biology. The species has been reared from Gymnospora senegalensis , Maytenus heterophylla , Maytenus arbutifolia and Maytenus fruits.
Distribution. Republic of South Africa, Swaziland, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Yemen, Madagascar.
Taxonomic note. DNA barcodes indicate that this species comprises two or three taxa (in Kenya Taita and Rift Valley BOLD:ABY3728, BOLD:AAE0418, and in South Africa BOLD:ACE4424 about 1.48% divergent with the latter BIN, the former BIN around 5.18-5.62% divergent from the last two), but morphological or biological differences have not been detected.
Type material. Holotype ♂ Swedish Museum of Natural History , Stockholm (not examined). REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA : Lectotype ♀ of perficitella, Pt Natal 55.96; Paralectotype without abdomen, same data (NH- MUK). Holotype ♂ of Trisophista pauli Viette ( MNHNP) (examined including genitalia slide) .
