6. Yponomeuta ioni sp. nov.
Description of adult ( Plate 1 View PLATE 1 ). Wingspan 22 mm. Head white, labial palpus porrect, segment 3 slightly longer than segment 2, segment 2 black, segment 3 black with white tip; scape whitish, darker distally, flagellum brownish grey weakly annulate. Thorax white with three black spots and black along anterior edge, tegula white with blackish anterior. Forewing ground colour white, a blotch of grey suffusion below costa at ⅓, another above dorsum at ½, a large blotch beyond disc, another at tornus and around termen; five irregular rows of black spots; fringe concolorous with adjacent wing. Hindwing grey.
Male genitalia ( Plate 8). Uncus concave, socius curved with pointed apex, valva simple, sacculus almost reaching to apex, saccus with a slight knob. Aedeagus long and curved with a double bend, one long cornutus.
Female genitalia: not known.
Diagnosis. Differs from other species in the location of the grey blotches on the forewing, and in the male genitalia by the shape of the sacculus and aedeagus.
Biology. Not known.
Derivation of the name. Named after our grandson Ion.
Distribution. Known only from the type locality in Ethiopia.
