Type species: Ardistomis fasciolatus Putzeys, 1846

Recognition of the genus: Mandibles distinctly elongate, narrow in apical half; clypeus nearly fused with clypeal wings; proepisternum with reticulated paralateral band or paralateral carina (depending on lineage); antennomere two and three of equal length; proepipleura in many species visible in dorsal view; striae of elytron distinct, complete, striate-punctate or impunctate; preapical epipleural plica distinct, interrupting outline of elytron, last visible abdominal sternum (sternum VII) with blunt tooth-like projection which fits in the preapical elytral plica; protibia ventrally with one seta at middle; males with tarsomeres of front legs usually conspicuously widened, those of intermediate legs distinctly widened and of hind legs slender.
