Ashinkailepas seepiophila Yamaguchi, Newman & Hashimoto, 2004

2004 Ashinkailepas seepiophila Yamaguchi, Newman and Hashimoto, J. Mar. Biol. Ass. U.K. 84: 112, figs. 1–4.

Distribution: A seamount at 1159 metres, off Hatsushima Island, Sagami Bay, Japan (35º00.11’N, 139º13.45’E).

Diagnosis. Ashinkailepas with capitular plates possessing strong apico-basal ridges crossed by moderately weak, transverse growth lines; tergum with prominent, narrow, apico-basal ridge, scutal shoulder of which extending out as flat, medial platform as far as apico-medial latus ridge; carina straight; apex of scutum protruding beyond occludent angle of tergum.

Remarks: The two species of Ashinkailepas are characterized by heavy, approximate, capitular plates and protruding peduncular scales; they differ primarily on the strength of the external ornamentation of the capitular plates,

PLATE 1. Ashinkailepas kermadecensis sp. nov., recovered from a 1165 metre deep “cold seep” near the Kermadec Ridge, South Pacific Ocean (31º51.65’S, 180º48.71’E). 1: Paratype (NIWA-18008), a: left side, b: detail of 1a, showing linear arrangement of peduncle scales on the outer “extended” surface (separate scale bar below = 5 mm). 2: Paratype (NIWA-18008), left side. 3: Paratype (NIWA-18008), left side. 4: Paratype (NIWA-18008), a: three specimens, with remnants of crinoid stem attached to the left scutum of the larger specimen; b: rotation of smaller specimen from 4a, with a 3.5 mm long juvenile attached just below the medial latus; 5: Holotype (NIWA-44722), left side. 6: Paratype (NIWA- 18008), a: oblique view to show attached juvenile; (note that in this view, the carina appears straighter than it actually is), b: detail of attached juvenile (use 5 mm scale bar below 1a). 7: Paratype ( J55679 View Materials ), left side. 8: Paratype (NIWA-18008), left side. 9: Paratype (NIWA-18008), left side. 10: Paratype (NIWA-18008), juvenile, left side. 11: Paratype ( J55679 View Materials ), left side. 12: Paratype ( J55679 View Materials ), left side. 13: Paratype ( J55679 View Materials ), juvenile, left side. 14: Paratype ( J55679 View Materials ), juvenile, left side. NIWA does not issue separate numbers for specimens in a paratype series. Use “ 5 mm ” scale bar at top right for all images except 1a and 6b.
