Description. Shell medium sized, moderately broad, with gradate spire and subcylindrical whorls with periphery at abapical suture. Protoconch unknown. Teleoconch of eight whorls. Spire whorls smooth with adsutural spiral cord at adapical suture delimited by one or two spiral grooves. Last whorl subcylindrical, slightly pinched below adsutural spiral cord, strongly constricted base. Aperture moderately narrow. Outer lip weakly thickened with about eight prominent lirae within, extending deep within aperture. Anal canal weakly incised, V-shaped. Siphonal canal long, narrow, slightly deflected, shallowly notched at tip. Columellar callus moderately thickened forming sharply delimited callus rim, with five indistinct denticles. Parietal callus weak.
Shell measurements and ratios. SL: 13.3–18.1 mm, MD: 5.2–6.6 mm, AA: 35–37°, SL/MD: 2.4–2.8, AL/AW: 3.6–4.0, LWH/AH: 1.3.
Discussion. Auingeria austriaca ( Hoernes & Auinger, 1880) is separated from its Paratethyan congeners in having weaker sculpture; much weaker cords than Auingeria grussbachensis (Czepreghy-Meznerics, 1969) , and no axials as in the strongly-sculptured Auingeria bellardii (Hoernes, 1852) .
Columbella adiecta Sacco, 1890 , from the middle Miocene of the Colli Torinesi ( Italy), has slightly stronger spiral sculpture than the Paratethyan specimens of Auingeria austriaca , but otherwise has similar shell features, and is considered herein to be a subjective junior synonym.
Palaeoenvironment. At the Niederleis section, sediment and fossils from coastal and lagoonal environments not exceeding 30 m water depth were transported by tempestites into offshore settings ( Mandic et al. 2002).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (middle Miocene): North Alpine-Carpathian Foreland Basin: Brno-Kníničky (Kinitz) (the Czech Republic); Vienna Basin: Niederleis ( Austria); Bükk Mountains: Borsodbóta ( Hungary) ( Csepreghy-Meznerics 1969).
Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Langhian (middle Miocene): Colli Torinesi: Rio della Batteria ( Italy) ( Sacco, 1890b).
