Revised description. Shell moderately small, slender fusiform, with high, weakly cyrtoconoid spire and shallow suture. Low dome-shaped protoconch of about three weakly convex whorls with weak mid-whorl angulation. Teleoconch of seven whorls. Early spire whorls comparatively low, weakly convex. Later whorls increasing in height, flat-sided or faintly convex. Last whorl moderately high, weakly convex, slowly contracting into short base. Shell surface smooth except for few prominent spiral cords over siphonal fasciole. Aperture narrow. Outer lip with internal labial callus pad developed, straight sided with about six denticles. D1 strongest, weakening adapically. Anal canal indistinct, shallow, broad U-shaped. Siphonal canal moderately short, moderately wide with shallow siphonal notch. Columellar callus forming sharply delimited callus rim, detached from base, without columellar denticles; no parietal callus.
Shell measurements and ratios. SL: 11.4–12.1 mm, MD: 3.1–3.6 mm, AA: 30–35°, SL/MD: 3.0–3.2, AL/AW: 3.5–4.3, LWH/AH: 1.3–1.5.
Discussion. The lectotype of this species was described and illustrated by Hilber (1879) from the Styrian Basin. Hilber (1879) already referred to additional specimens from the Vienna Basin stored in the collections of the NHMW, which laid the foundation for future confusion. A year later, these ‘collection specimens’ were included by Hoernes & Auinger (1880) in their descriptions, which strongly distorted the understanding of Mitrella petersi . These specimens differ from Mitrella petersi in their larger size, higher spire and distinctly more slender outline, and are described herein as Mitrella elongatissima nov. sp. Probably due to these misidentifications by Hoernes & Auinger (1880), Boettger (1906) described this species again as Columbella (Mitrella) kostejana , which is a subjective junior synonym.
Palaeoenvironment. Inner neritic lagoonal environments (own data).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (middle Miocene): Carpathian Foredeep: Korytnica ( Poland) ( Bałuk 1995); Vienna Basin: Perchtoldsdorf ( Austria) ( Toth 1948); Styrian Basin: Guglitz at St. Florian ( Austria) ( Hilber 1879), Făget Basin: Coşteiu de Sus ( Romania) ( Boettger 1906).
Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Serravallian (middle Miocene): Karaman Basin: Seyithasan ( Turkey) ( Landau et al. 2013).
