Halictus alaris Vachal, 1904: 21 . Lectotype female, Brazil: Goiás, Jataí (MNHN; examined). Augochlora phylacis Brèthes, 1909: 242 . Holotype male, Paraguay: San Bernardino (MACN; examined).

Comments

The study of the type material of Halictus alaris and Augochlora phylacis confirms the synonymy proposed by Moure & Hurd (1987). The holotype of Augochlora phylacis closely resembles males from the type locality of T. alaris (which are described below) except for the coarser punctation on the lateral mesepisternum above the scrobe. The punctation on the mesepisternum, however, varies considerably among the material examined.

This species has a wide distribution (Fig. 30), overlapping largely with T. brachycera sp. nov. (Fig. 32), in central Brazil. Among the specimens here placed in T. alaris , there is some variation in female body size (e.g. maximum head width ranging from 1.75 to 2.06 mm), and in some male features (as body punctation and pubescence of ventral process of the gonostylus). Some of the smallest females (from Diamantina and Uberlândia, in Minas Gerais, and from Chapada dos Guimarães, in Mato Grosso) have a more elongate head and might constitute a separate species. Lack of other distinguishing features and of corresponding males makes it difficult to propose new unequivocal taxa.

Also, we could not find morphological differences to separate the females of T. alaris from those of T. basiatra , in spite of the differences between the males. Therefore, the diagnosis applies only to the males. The females are attributed to each species based on the geographic distribution of the males. Fortunately, there are no cases of overlap (except around the city of São Paulo), this facilitated sex association for T. alaris .

In the phylogenetic analysis ( Fig. 34 View FIGURE 34 ), T. alaris came out as sister-group of a clade containing T. basiatra , T. hamata and T. mixta , a relationship supported by the patch of very short setae on mid portion of male sternum IV and by the thin elongate flap on the parapenial lobe (characters 10 and 14, Figs. 15–29 View FIGURES 15 – 19 View FIGURES 20 – 25 View FIGURES 26 – 29 ).

Male diagnosis

Antennal flagellomeres II to XI subequal in length, short pubescence uniformly covering the anterior surface of flagellomeres; face wider than long; fore leg trochanter without dorsal hook; S4 disc with sparse and short pubescence, medially with a tuft of very short setae.

Description

Male (from Jataí, Goiás State, Brazil). Measurements. Eye: 1.11; cl: 0.4; c-a: 0.28; c-o: 0.89; mhl: 1.54; c-e: 0.2; mhw: 1.73; F4: 0.22; mml: 0.08; abl: 5. (1) Head. Wider than long. Supraclypeal area only weakly convex, its lateral portions with same curvature as adjacent parocular surface. (2) Antennae. Flagellomeres II to XI subequal in length; anterior surface homogeneously covered by short pubescence; posterior surface of flagellomeres II to VII only weakly depressed in relation to anterior surface. (3) Mesoscutum. Outline, in dorsal view, of lateral half of projecting anterior border rounded. (4) Mesepisternum. Area below scrobal groove densely punctured, not rugulose. (5) Metapostnotum. Basal sulcus with few complete transverse carinae. (6) Propodeum. Punctation on dorso-lateral area dense, punctures about one-half puncture diameter apart. (7) Legs. Fore leg trochanter without dorsal hook, hook of mid leg trochanter short, about one-half to one-third trochanter width. (8) Metasoma. Disc of S4 with a central patch of erect short setae and few lateral hairs. (9) Genitalia. Not dissected (see Figure 20–21 View FIGURES 20 – 25 ). (10) Body color. Bright metallic green with mandibles, labrum, clypeal apex, tibiae and tarsi yellow; tibiae with brown marks on the external surface.

Female lectotype. Measurements. Eye: 1.13; cl: 0.51; c-a: 0.88; c-o: 1.02; mhl: 1.75; c-e: 0.26; mhw: 2.06; mml: 0.1; abl: 7.52. (1) Head. Wider than long. Supraclypeal area only weakly convex, its lateral portions with same curvature as adjacent parocular surface; lower paraocular area with many decumbent and few erect hairs, the latter with very short branches; malar space short. (2) Mesoscutum. Outline, in dorsal view, of lateral half of projecting anterior border almost straight, surface of border wrinkled. (3) Mesepisternum. Almost entirely finely rugulose and irregularly punctured. (4) Metapostnotum. Transverse carinae of basal sulcus conspicuous and relatively strong, posterior border of sulcus sharp, almost carinate. (5) Propodeum. Entirely covered with dense fine punctures and minute plumose hairs. (6) Legs. Fore leg trochanter without dorsal hook; hook of mid leg trochanter short, about two-fifth trochanter width. (7) Metasoma. Punctures on marginal zone of T2 about 2–3 puncture diameters apart, denser on disc (about one puncture diameter apart). (8) Body color. Bright metallic green with brown legs.
