Metadrinomyia Shima, 1980: 259 View in CoL (type species, Metadrinomyia proclinata Shima View in CoL , by original designation)

Diagnosis. The genus Metadrinomyia can be diagnosed by the combination of the following characteristics (modified from Shima, 1980): 1) anepimeral seta indistinguishable from nearby setulae; 2) abdominal tergite 5 without discal setae; 3) distiphallus relatively long and subbasally bent downward at a right angle; and 4) female with hook-like sternite 7 in postabdomen.

Redescription. Body predominantly dark brown with pruinosity in varying color; setae black; setulae mostly black but pale on some areas. Head dark brown with bare compound eyes; lunule bare; arista dark brown, bare; parafacial bare; vibrissa well developed, arising above level of epistome; 1–2 strong supravibrissal setae; 6–8 subvibrissal setae; postocular setae extending fully from upper eye margin to lower eye margin; occiput with 1 row of black setulae behind postocular row, rest of occiput covered with whitish brown setulae; genal seta strong and genal dilation weakly developed; mouthparts with slightly clavate palpus with short black setulae; prementum dark brown with yellow brown setulae posteriorly; labella dark brown with long fine yellow brown setulae. Thorax dark brown to blackish brown in ground color; scutum with dense pruinosity in varying color; 4 dark brown scutal vittae discernible when viewed from behind; inner vittae parallel without interruption; outer vittae interrupted around transverse suture; prosternum 0–5 marginal setae; 2–3+3 acrostichal; 3+3 dorsocentral; 1–2+3 intraalar; 1+3 supraalar; 1 strong and 1 weak postalar setae; proepisternum with 1 strong upward seta; proepimeron with 2 upward setae; anepimeron transversely hairy in middle; katepisternum with 3 setae and weak dark brown setulae; katepimeron bare; katatergite bare; anatergite bare; meron bare except for vertical row of strong setae; mediotergite dark brown with whitish yellow pruinosity; scutellum with 3 clearly discernible pairs of divergent setae, basal setae short, lateral and subapical setae strong; apical and discal scutellar setae often not recognizable from nearby setulae. Legs yellow brown to blackish brown, densely covered with setae and setulae; fore tibia with 2 strong posterior setae; midtibia with 1–3 anterodorsal, 2 posterodorsal, and 1 ventral setae; hind tibia with 2–3 posterodorsal setae; hind tibia without posteroventral apical seta. Wing with basicosta and veins dark brown; C beyond subcostal break ventrally bare; costal spine 3x as long as costal setulae; crossvein dm-cu oblique; wing cell r4+5 open. Abdomen dark brown to blackish brown in ground color with black setae and setulae; each visible tergite with pruinosity except subshiny area at posterior 1/4–1/5; middorsal depression extending to middle of tergite 1+2; tergites 3–5 each with discernible but irregular discal setae. Male genitalia with basally bent distiphallus; acrophallus directed dorsally; epiphallus absent. Female postabdomen with sternite 7 modified into sharply pointed and downcurved hook-like piercer.
