Diagnosis. Metadrinomyia xanthokolos can be readily distinguished from its dark-legged congeners by the yellow brown legs ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1. A – B F, 1H).

Description. Male. Body almost entirely dark brown with yellow brown pruinosity; wing length 5.1– 5.9mm; thorax length 2.4–2.8mm. Head ( Figs. 2E–F View FIGURE 2. A – J ) with frons-head ratio 0.27–0.32, eye ratio 0.55–0.68, gena-eye ratio 0.06–0.08, arista-antenna ratio 0.9–1.1; inner vertical seta 0.51–0.57x as long as longest diameter of eye; outer vertical seta 0.42–0.48x as long as inner vertical seta; ocellar seta 0.50–0.75x as long as inner vertical seta; postocellar seta 0.35–0.48x as long as inner vertical seta; paravertical seta short but clearly discernible, about 0.22–0.27x as long as inner vertical seta; fronto-orbital plate with yellow brown pruinosity, without setulae; 7–8 frontal setae, above level of aristal sockets; proclinate orbital seta absent; 2 reclinate orbital setae 0.59–0.65x as long as inner vertical seta; frontal vitta black, bare; pedicel, scape and flagellomere 1 dark brown with yellow brown pruinosity; aristomere 1 as long as wide; aristomere 2 twice as long as wide; basal 1/4–1/5 of aristomere 3 thickened; flagellomere 1 slender, about 2.9–3.4x as long as wide; parafacial with densely yellowish brown pruinosity, bare, 0.83x as wide as flagellomere 1; postgena moderately swollen with relatively long whitish yellow setulae, mixed with several black setulae anteriorly; palpus orange brown with dark brown setulae. Thorax ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1. A – B E–F) almost entirely dark brown with yellow brown pruinosity; postpronotum with 2 setae; scutellum with 3 scutellar setae, subapical seta 2.6–3.3x as long as scutellum length, lateral seta 0.87x to as long as subapical seta, basal seta 0.44–0.63x as long as subapical seta, discal seta hair-like, apical seta not recognizable; anepisternum with 1–2 small setae anterodorsally; posterior spiracle with reddish brown hairy lappet; prosternum medially with 0–3 setulae. Legs ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1. A – B F) almost yellow brown with dark brown setae and setulae; midtibia with 1 anterodorsal and 2 posterior setae; tarsal claws as long as 5th tarsomere. Wing ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1. A – B E–F) hyaline with slightly dark brown tinge; wing-thorax ratio 2.1–2.2, vein R4+5 ratio 2.4–3.0, vein M ratio 0.9–1.2, subcosta-costa ratio 0.50–0.64; fork of R2+3 and R4+5 dorsally and ventrally with 1 tiny seta each; tegula blackish brown; basicosta yellow to orange brown. Abdomen dark brown in ground color with yellow brown pruinosity. Genitalia (Figs. 3G–H) yellow brown to dark brown; sternite 5 (Fig. 3I) with V-shaped median cleft, half as deep as sternite length; epandrium anterolaterally without setae; cerci narrow in lateral view, equilateral triangular in posterior view, apically divided, extending far beyond tip of surstylus.

Female. ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1. A – B G–H, 2G–H, 3K) similar to male except for the following non-genitalic characters: Body with more whitish pruinosity; wing length 4.5–5.8mm; thorax length 2.0– 2.7mm. Head with eye ratio 0.58– 0.61; inner vertical seta 0.56–0.60x as long as longest diameter of eye; outer vertical seta 0.48–0.55x as long as inner vertical seta; first flagellomere 3.3–4.3x longer than wide; usually with 1 reclinate orbital seta, 0.54– 0.64x as long as inner vertical seta. Wing with wing-thorax ratio 2.2–2.3, vein R4+5 ratio 2.80–3.2. Base of hook-like sternite 7 in postabdomen (Fig 3K) with distinct ventral hump.
