Erect or ascending, often forming large rich-branched clumps, to 50 cm tall. Shoots homophyllous, equally thick throughout, 10–18 mm in diam. incl. leaves. Stems excl. leaves 2–6 mm thick at the base, ridged by decurrent leaf bases (dried). Leaves uniform throughout, borne in alternating, distant to crowded whorls of 5–6, these (2–) 3–6 mm apart, wide-spreading or ascending to sharply reflexed, usually strongly recurved, lanceolate, usually short-acute, 5–8 × 1.2–2 mm, usually adaxially convex and shining with obscure to prominent vein, abaxially irregularly concave (dried) dull, coriaceous, with obscure to somewhat prominent vein, with flat to slightly revolute, sparsely toothed to nearly entire margins. Leaf bases prominently decurrent; sporangia 1.5–2 mm wide.

Distribution:— Costa Rica, Panamá.

­­­ Habitats:—Terrestrial on banks in montane forest and páramo, 3000–3200 m elev.

­­­ Notes:—Resembles Phlegmariurus reflexus in growth habit, and the reflexed, toothed leaves, but it is larger and coarser in all parts. It occurs in more protected sites than P. reflexus or P. eversus , usually growing in shade of Chusquea or Buddleja .

Chiriquí: Volcán Barú, Los Fogones, Florpan et al. 1582 (PMA). Panamá: Cordillera de Talamanca, 4 airline km NW of main peak of Cerro Fábrega, 3000–3150 m, Davidse et al. 25380 (AAU, US). Ca. 2 km SW of Itamut Camp, Fábrega, 3100–3200 m, Gómez et al. 22560 (AAU, MO). Páramo of Cerro Echandí, 3000–3162 m, Gómez et al. 22685 (MO)
