Lasiochira taiwanensis sp. nov.

( Figs. 8, 9 View FIGURES 4 − 9 , 17 View FIGURES 14 − 19 , 23 View FIGURES 20 − 26 )

Description. Adult ( Figs. 8, 9 View FIGURES 4 − 9 ). Wing expanse 13.0−15.0 mm. Head creamy. Labial palpus white, second segment tinged with yellowish brown, third segment with a broad deep yellowish brown ring at distal 1/3. Antenna pale yellowish brown, pecten length about 1.5 times width of scape. Thorax and tegula creamy, thorax with three pale yellowish brown bands at basal 1/4, at distal 2/5 and before apex respectively. Forewing with costal margin slightly arched, apex triangularly protruding, termen oblique; ground color pale ocherous brown, paler between fold and dorsum, yellow on apical area; N-shaped pattern creamy, running from basal 2/5 of costal margin obliquely ventrad to before lower angle of cell, then arched obliquely up-outward to before end of costal margin and slightly expanded costal margin, finally arched ventrad to before ventro-apex; first stripe edged with black scales on inner margin medially, erect scale tufts indistinct; between first and second stripes yellow on costal margin, with a brown patch bearing a white dot at middle between upper corner of two stripes; second stripe edged with black scales medially on its outer margin; between second and third stripes with an ill-defined brown patch; a blackish brown spot at ventro-apex, on outer margin of third stripe; distinct scale tufts at 3/5 of fold and at distal 1/5 above fold; fringe golden yellow basally, white tinged greyish brown distally. Hindwing dark brown; fringe deep greyish yellow. Legs pale ocherous brown tinged with white scales; tarsi with white at apex of each segment dorsally.

Male genitalia ( Fig. 17 View FIGURES 14 − 19 ). Uncus broad at base, gradually narrowed to about 3/5, distal 2/5 nearly parallel to blunt apex. Gnathos somewhat beak-like, broad at base, narrowed to hooked apex; lateral arms narrowly banded. Valva short and broad, sub-rectangular, apex bluntly truncate; costa nearly straight; ventral margin semicircularly concave beyond end of sacculus, distally protruding and arched. Sacculus with basal half uniformly narrow, distal half widened and forming a broad triangular process directing downward. Vinculum narrowly banded. Saccus broad, triangular. Juxta sub-square, anterior margin concave medially, posterior margin shallowly concave widely, forming a pair of thumb-like lateral lobes, lateral margin concave medially. Aedeagus stout, tubular, slightly shorter than valva, roundly protruding distally; cornuti consisting of three to four large sclerotized, irregular plates.

Female genitalia ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 20 − 26 ). Papillae anales setose, rounded posteriorly. Apophyses posteriores about twice length of apophyses anteriores. Eighth sternite with long setae on posterior margin, posterior half parallel laterally, anterior half gradually narrowed. Ostium bursae semicircular, open anteriorly, with a spine at each side curved inward. Antrum inverted trapezoidal. Ductus bursae granulous in inner wall, widened medially; ductus seminalis arising from between basal half of ductus bursae. Corpus bursae ovate; signum triangular, toothed, anterior margin concave inward and dentate.

Type material. Holotype ♂, Kukuan, Taroko Natl. Park, Taichung Co., Taiwan, 720 m, 8 Jul. 1996, genitalia slide No. YAH13045, coll. K. T. Park et J. S. Lee ( KNA). Paratype: 1 ♀, Ming-Chr, Ilan Co., Taiwan, 1160 m, 9−10 Jul. 1996, coll. K. T. Park et H. K. Lee ( KNA).

Distribution. China ( Taiwan).

Diagnosis. This new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the sacculus with the ventral margin nearly straight in the male genitalia, and the ostium bursae with a spine at each side anteriorly in the female genitalia.

Etymology. The epithet of this new species is derived from the type locality.

Note. The female of this species was not collected from the same locality as the male, and the color of its thorax and tegula as well as the color of the N-shaped pattern on the forewing are snowy white. Despite this minor difference in color, all the patterns on the forewing are the same as those in male. We herein tentatively match them as a pair.
