Etymology

The specific name is a feminine noun from the Latin nanus, meaning “dwarf” in reference to the small body of this species, which is much smaller than the previous species.

Measurements of types

Measurements are given in mm for 1 male or 10 females. Length of body: male 20.9, female 19.9 (18.2–20.9); length of forewing: male 25.8, female 28.4 (26.5–30.1); width of forewing: male 8.5, female 9.1 (8.5–9.5); length of head: male 2.8, female 2.9 (2.6–3.2); width of head including eyes: male 6.4, female 7.0 (6.5–7.4); width of pronotum: male 6.4, female 7.4 (6.6–7.8); width of mesonotum: male 5.7, female 6.4 (5.8–6.8); wing span: male 57.2, female 61.9 (57.8–64.6). Ratio of body length to head width: male 3.27; female 2.84 (2.76–2.93).

Diagnosis

This species is closely allied to P. abdominalis but distinguished mainly by much smaller body size and the uncus with a deeply concave median longitudinal groove ( Figure 6A View Figure 6 ).

Description of male ( Figure 4 View Figure 4 )

Head greenish ochraceous with the following black to fuscous markings: a median marking surrounding ocelli, of which anterior tip not reaching frontoclypeal suture; a pair of spots on the sides of the median marking, which curved to extend to lateral part of head; a pair of spots on supra-antennal plates; a median fascia along posterior margin of head; and two other pairs of tiny spots. Distance between lateral ocelli and compound eyes about as wide as twice the distance between two lateral ocelli. Postclypeus much swollen. Antennae dark brown. Ventral part of head greenish ochraceous with black to fuscous markings. Postclypeus with fasciae along transverse grooves on about anterior three-quarters, with first four long but rest of them short. Anteclypeus with a pair of paramedian longitudinal large spots on about anterior half. Rostrum black apically; passing centre of sternite II. Lorum with a small marking on anterior apical part and a small longitudinal marking along inner margin. Gena with a small transverse spot between postclypeus and compound eye.

Pronotum greenish ochraceous. Inner area of pronotum with a pair of central longitudinal fasciae broadened at both anterior and posterior ends, a pair of short, oblique branches from around middle of the central longitudinal fasciae along paramedian fissures, a median transverse fascia along anterior margin of pronotum, a pair of obliquely longitudinal curved fasciae between median parts of paramedian fissures and posterior ends of lateral fissures, a pair of fasciae along lateral fissures, and a pair of curved fasciae along lateral margins of inner area, black to fuscous. Pronotal collar with a narrow transverse fascia along posterior margin and a few indistinct spots on lateral parts. Anterolateral pronotal collar slightly developed and dentate.

Mesonotum greenish ochraceous with a median longitudinal fascia slightly broadened posteriorly to reach anterior margin of cruciform elevation, a pair of small roundish spots enclosing scutal depressions, a pair of inwardly curved fasciae along parapsidal sutures, and three pairs of longitudinally arranged spots on lateral sigilla, with anterior-most one nearly touching anterior margin of mesonotum, black to fuscous. Cruciform elevation greenish ochraceous with fuscous anterior subapical parts. Ventral part of thorax greenish ochraceous with a pair of fuscous spots on basisternum 2 and a pair of fuscous spots on basisternum 3.

Legs greenish ochraceous to ochraceous. Fore-femur with a small subapical spine as well as primary and secondary spines and a fuscous fascia along midline of ventral side. About apical one-third of fore- and mid-pretarsi fuscous. Fore- and mid-pretarsal claws brown with fuscous apical part.

Wings hyaline. Forewing with a distinct infuscation at bases of apical cells 2 and 3. A spot appearing on each hind margin of veins radius anterior 2 (RA 2), radius posterior (RP), median veins 1–4 (M 1–4), and cubitus anterior 1 (CuA 1), which are indistinct in holotype and some female paratypes. Basal cell slightly tinged with ochraceous. Basal membrane and hind wing jugum grey.

Operculum greenish ochraceous with indistinct brown spot on anterior margin and fuscous fascia along lateral margin; upside-down triangular with posterior angle rounded, and scarcely passing posterior margin of sternite II. Lateral margin of operculum sinuate at base. Anterior two-thirds of inner margin deeply concave. Two opercula widely apart from each other, with gap about half as wide as operculum.

Abdomen cylindrical, much longer than distance from head to cruciform elevation. Abdomen mostly ochraceous, but tergite 8 mostly fuscous. Tergite 7 with fuscous lateral margins. Tergites 3, 4, 5 and 6 without distinct marking. Caudal margins of each tergite darker. Posterior margin of tergite 3 wider than anterior margin of mesonotum. Timbal cover ochraceous; quarter round with lateral side about as long as but slightly shorter than width of timbal cover and with anterior angles rounded. Timbal concealed with timbal cover in dorsal view. Ventral part of abdomen ochraceous except sternite VII. Sternites III and IV each with a pair of tubercles on lateral surfaces, which protrude ventrally but slightly obliquely downward. Apical half or three-quarters of the tubercles fuscous.

Male genitalia ( Figure 6 View Figure 6 ): pygofer oval in ventral view. Uncus simple, short, undivided, and with a widely truncate apex in ventral view; with a deeply concave median longitudinal groove. Distal shoulder of pygofer slightly extended distally and upcurved and pointed dorsally. Basal lobe of pygofer present, but not prominent.

Description of female ( Figure 5 View Figure 5 )

Operculum light green without distinct marking; scarcely or not touching posterior margin of sternite II. Anterior margin of operculum narrower than posterior margin. Lateral margin of operculum sinuate at base. Ventral part of abdomen dark ochraceous with fuscous fasciae along posterior margin of each of sternites III–VI and epipleurites 3–6. Sternite VII with a transverse fascia along posterior margin and a pair of sublateral spots, which sometimes fused to each other, fuscous. Abdominal segment 9 ochraceous dorsally with a pair of longitudinal fuscous lateral markings on about anterior half. Ovipositor sheath fuscous, slightly beyond anal styles. Dorsal beak about as long as protruding part of ovipositor sheath.
