Variation: some specimens have the mesosoma and metasoma lighter or rufous castaneous, tergal process with depression slightly inclined or with antero-lateral margin subangulate in posterior view, deeper or shallower, tuft wider or less dense, in only one specimen from Dominica setae directed dorsally. Genitalia with dorsal margin of paramere sometimes somewhat sinuous, dorsal body of aedeagus sometimes exceeding height of volsella.
Comments: this species is similar to D. fungosus in having the tergal process with a large and deep depression and inner part of paramere with distinct long seta medially, but D. fungosus has mandible tetradentate, tergal process widely separated and tuft of setae directed dorsally, whereas D. coronatus has mandible tridentate, tergal process with depression closer to each other with tuft of setae directed backward, and genitalia with dorsal body having a crown-like structure.
Etymology: specific epithet comes from Latin and refers to the basal structure of dorsal body that is reminiscent of a crown.
Distribution: Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Dominica, Trinidad & Tobago, Ecuador.
