Type materia l. Holotype male, CANADA: Manitoba, Lake Winnipeg, 3 km off George Island, 27.vi.1969, P.S.S. Chang ( CNC).

Diagnostic characters. The male imago is characterized by having the front legs coloured reddish-brown and much darker than the ochraceous to light reddish-brown middle and hind legs, the frontal tubercles which are about 1.5 times as long as their basal diameter, a BR1 of about 7.5, ta2/ta3 of front leg is about 1.04, and the scarlike mark on base of sixth tergite is about 0.4 times as long as the tergite and 1.3 times as long as the mark at the base of the second tergite.

Etymology. From Latin, para, equal, like, referring to the similarity to G. testaceus Townes.

Description. Male imago (n = 1)

Total length 8.76 mm. Total length 4.49 mm. Total length/wing length 1.95. Total length/length of profemur 3.07. Coloration blackish testaceous. Haltere knob brownish. Wing veins brown, wing very slightly tinged with brown and barely seamed with pale gray. Whole p l and coxa and trochanter of p2 and p3 dark reddish-brown, femur of p2 and p3 pale reddish-brown, ta l of p l and p2 ochraceous.

Head. AR 3.94. Temporals 41. Clypeus with 53 setae. Tentorium 235 µm long. Stipes 265 µm long. Frontal tubercles 16 µm long, 10 µm wide. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 61, 95, 272, 252, 340.

Thorax. Antepronotum bare. Dorsocentrals 36, prealars 9, scutellum with about 48 setae.

Wing. VR 1.05. Brachiolum with 4–5 setae, R with 30–35, R1 with 30–31, R4+5 with 16 setae. Squama with 34 setae.

Legs ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A). Sensilla chaetica 36 at 0.49–0.92 of ta1 of p2, 1 at 0.50 of ta1 of p3, ta2 of p1 1.04 times as long as ta3. Bristle ratios of ta2–ta4 of p l as: 8.44, 9.50, 9.03. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 2.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B).T IX with 11 oromedian setae and 56 setae near base of anal point, laterosternites IX each with 7–8 setae. Phallapodeme 206 µm long. Transverse sternapodene 116 µm long. Anal point 137 µm long. Gonocoxite 343 µm long; gonostylus 299 µm long. HR 1.15, HV 2.93.

Remarks. This species has a coloration like Glyptotendipes (G.) testaceus Townes (Townes 1945: 140) , but is otherwise more generally like G. (G.) paripes (Edwards) ( Townes 1945: 141 and present paper).
