Glyptotendipes (Glyptotendipes) paulisensus View in CoL sp. n.

( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 A)

Type material. Holotype male, CANADA: Manitoba, Lake Winnipeg, Grand Rapids Government Wharf, 28.vii. 1969, P.S.S. Chang ( CNC). Paratypes: 4 males as holotype; Gull Harbour, 37 males, 4 females, 16.vii. 1969; Victoria Beach, 2 males, 25.vii. 1969; 20 Mile Creek, 1 male, 1.ix. 1969; Old Fishing Dock, 2 males, 14.ix. 1969; Hecla Island, 91 males, 27.vii. 1969.

Diagnostic characters. The species belongs to the G. lobiferus agglomerate and the males can only be determined with certainty using the discriminant function mentioned above under G. l o b i f e r u s. However, nearly all specimens are separable from G. lobiferus by means of a lower wing length, lower AR, lower number of sensilla chaetica on p2, and a generally lower chaetotaxy. The females appear easily separable from G. lobiferus by means of lower number of setae on gonocoxite IX and wider ventrolateral lobe of gonapophysis VIII.

Etymology. From Latin, paulus, little, and, sensus, feel, referring to the relatively low number of sensilla chaetica on p2.

Description. Male imago (n = 17 except when otherwise stated)

Total length 3.4–4.0, 3.78 mm; Total length/length of profemur 2.45–2.82, 2.60.

Head. AR 3.56–4.11, 3.82.

Thorax. Dorsocentrals 28–49, 37; prealars 7–13, 8.9; supraalars 1–3, 1.6; setae on scutellum 22–43, 34.

Wing. Squama with 21–27, 28 setae.

Legs. Sensilla chaetica on ta1 of p 2 7–26, 17; sensilla chaetica on ta1 of p3 0–2, 0.18; BR of ta l 3.24–5.50, 4.21(6); BR of ta1 3.44–6.67, 5.61(5); BR of ta3 2.67–6.75, 5.35(5). 16

Abdomen. Scarlike impression on T VI 0.53–0.68, 0.64(6) times as long as segment and 2.1–2.6, 2.3(6) times as long as scar on T II.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 A). HR 0.92–1.24, 1.05.

Other characteristics as in G. lobiferus .

Female imago (n = 4)

Total length 4.2–4.4, 4.26 mm; Total length/length of profemur 2.56–2.72, 2.66.

Head. AR 0.39–0.53, 0.46.

Thorax. Dorsocentrals 48–63, 53; prealars 6–9, 8; supraalar 1; 25 scutellum with 32–40, 37 setae.

Wing. Squama with 33–51, 40 setae.

Legs. Sensilla chaetica 57–61, 59 on ta1 of p2; 26–46, 36 on ta1 of p3.

Genitalia. Gonocoxite IX each with 4–5, 5 setae; T IX with 70–78, 75 setae; segment X with 11–16, 13 setae on each side; notum 206–240, 229 µm long; ventrolateral lobe 36–54, 44 µm wide; apodeme lobe 62–74, 70 µm long; seminal capsule 184–190, 188 µm long.
