Niphargus impexus Karaman G.S., 2016 View in CoL

Published records: Karaman G.S. (2016a).

Distribution: Endemic to Greece: Crete Island (KR).

Type material: Holotype: male 9.8 mm, S-6186= Greece: Crete Island, Iraklion (=Irakleio), well 1 km after Panagio-Nigaditos , 04.05.1995 (leg. R. Agrano) ,. Paratype: female 9.2 mm, data same as for holotype.

Remarks: The distribution of the species is restricted to Crete Island; it has been found so far only in the type locality. There are some morphological similarities with N. rhodi from Rhodos Island. The occurrences of these two species are limited on their own island, which are separated by kilometers of sea and were not in contact in recent times, supporting their species status (Karaman G.S. 2016a).

Etymology: The name impexus (derived from the Latin “impexus” meaning “disheveled”) refers to the numerous B setae on mandibular palp.
