Type host. Little crake, Porzana parva (Scopoli) (Syn. Gallinula pusilla Bechstein ) ( Gruiformes : Rallidae ).

Type locality. Russian Federation; specific type locality unknown.

Additional hosts. Water rail, Rallus aquaticus Linnaeus ; Virginia rail, Rallus limicola Vieillot ( Gruiformes : Rallidae )— Yamaguti (1971).

Additional localities. Tadzhikistan; Iowa, USA—Yamaguti (1971).

Previously proposed synonyms. Ophthalmophagus massinoi Witenberg, 1926 — Joyeux & Baer (1927); Ophthalmophagus nasicola Witenberg, 1923 , O. massinoi and Ophthalmophagus charadrii Yamaguti, 1934 — Dubois (1959).

Remarks. The original description of this species was brief and included only a body length (4 mm), a body width (1 mm) and a rudimentary illustration. Kossack (1911) redescribed the species apparently from the specimens (No. 622; Vienna Museum) used in the original description by Stossich (1902). Stossich (1902) considered the ovary to be intertesticular and nearly in line with the nearly tandem testes, which would place this species in Hyptiasminae. Although Stossich (1902) described the genital pore as being prepharyngeal, he considered thevitelline fields to be not confluent posteriorly ( Prohyptiasmus ), while Kossack (1911, Fig. 9 View FIGURES 5 – 9 ) apparently considered the ovary to be posttesticular (Ophthalmophaginae) and the vitelline fields to be confluent posteriorly ( Ophthalmophagus ). We agree with Kossack (1911) and more recent authors (e.g. Dubois 1959; Yamaguti 1971) that the ovary is posttesticular and nearly in a straight line with the nearly tandem testes (Ophthalmophaginae) and that the vitelline fields are confluent posteriorly, and support its assignment to Ophthalmophagus . Joyeux & Baer (1927) considered this species to be in Spaniometra. No oral or ventral sucker described—Stossich (1902); Kossack (1911); Bashkirova (1950).
