Distribution.

A very common cosmopolitan species ranging from lowlands to mountains. The larvae are saprobiotic, occasionally associated with fungi; the adults are often found in unclean bathrooms. Known from Austria, Azores, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Canary Islands, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy (incl. Sardinia), Madeira, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, Turkey, Abkhazia, Afghanistan, Africa mer., Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Azores, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Iran, Israel, Juan Fernandéz Islands, New Zealand, Puerto Rico Islands, Tunisia, USA ( Krek 1985; Wagner 1990, 2018; Ježek and Goutner 1995; Ježek and Yağci 2005; Kvifte et al. 2011; Salmela et al. 2014; Ježek et al. 2017).
