Revised description. Very large, moderately slender fusiform shell of up to seven teleoconch whorls; apical angle ~50°. Protoconch paucispiral, low conical, diameter 800 μm. First two teleoconch whorls weakly convex with periphery close above abapical suture; later whorls convex with shallow, concave subsutural ramp and narrow subsutural collar. Sculpture of eight broad axial ribs, separated by wider interspaces. Spiral sculpture of two cords on subsutural collar, four narrow cords on subsutural ramp, three prominent cords along periphery with secondary spirals intercalated in interspaces. Axial ribs reduced to blunt or slightly pointed nodes along shoulder. Last whorl attaining ~70% of total height, with broad subsutural ramp, roundly shouldered, moderately convex below. Spiral sculpture weakening on last whorl, most prominent on subsutural ramp, often subobsolete along periphery. Shoulder smooth or with about eight large nodes. Base moderately convex, strongly constricted, with more or less prominent spiral cords. Fasciole relatively narrow, rounded, with prominent growth lines, delimited by narrow chink from columellar callus. Aperture moderately wide, pyriform. Columellar callus forming broad rim along siphonal canal, adhered above. Columella moderately and broadly excavated with three strongly oblique columellar folds deep inside aperture, adapical fold weaker. Folds not visible in aperture in fully-grown specimens. Abapical fold marking slightly angled transition to siphonal canal. Anal canal small, narrowly incised. Outer lip thin, weakly notched at shoulder, with numerous thin lirae extending deep within aperture. Siphonal canal moderately long, narrow, straight or slightly deflected to the left.
Paratethyan synonyms. Fasciolaria tarbelliana andella De Gregorio, 1885b: 49 was established by De Gregorio (1885b) as new name for the specimens illustrated by Hörnes (1854: pl. 33, figs 2–3). Fasciolaria tarbelliana nodosa Hoernes & Auinger 1890 , was established for specimens with very prominent nodes. Fasciolaria tarbelliana inermis Hoernes & Auinger, 1890 represents a large specimen with reduced sculpture on the last whorl. The name is preoccupied by Fasciolaria inermis Jonas, 1846 . As we consider Fasciolaria inermis Hoernes & Auinger, 1890 to be a subjective junior synonym of Aurantilaria tarbelliana ( Grateloup, 1845) , no replacement name is needed.
Discussion. Aurantilaria tarbelliana ( Grateloup, 1845) is extremely variable in sculpture, which led Hoernes & Auinger (1890) to introduce subspecies names for specimens with reduced sculpture and specimens with prominent nodes. All these morphotypes co-occur with ‘normal’ shells and separation is unjustified. We have not seen protoconchs of specimens from the northeastern Atlantic but the paucispiral, low conical shape seems to be typical for the genus: see also Aurantilaria michelotiana ( Grateloup, 1845) and Aurantilaria cf. angulata ( Grateloup, 1845) from the Early Miocene of France in Lozouet (2015: text-fig. 2f–g).
Aurantilaria cantaurana Landau & Vermeij, 2014 , from the Burdigalian Cantaure Formation in Venezuela, is strikingly similar to A. tarbelliana and attains the same size (see Landau & Vermeij 2014: pl. 3, figs 13–15). The Venezuelan species was not compared with A. tarbelliana in the original discussion, an omission corrected herein. The two are extremely similar in size and sculptural variability. However, in A. cantaurana the columellar folds are visible on apertural view in fully adult specimens and there is a parietal fold, not evident in A. tarbelliana . It is possible that they represent the same species, but so few species from Cantaure have an amphiatlantic distribution that we prefer to keep them separate.
