Description. Large to very large, slender fusiform shell of up to nine teleoconch whorls; apical angle ~42°. Protoconch unknown. Early teleoconch whorls weakly convex with periphery at abapical suture. Broad axial ribs, crossed by three prominent spiral cords. Later whorls with broad, weakly convex subsutural ramp, narrow subsutural collar and angular shoulder, weakly convex to nearly straight sided below. Suture moderately incised, shallowly undulating. Axial sculpture weakening on late teleoconch whorls, often subobsolete on last whorl. Spiral sculpture of late teleoconch whorls of about seven narrow cords on subsutural ramp, weakening towards suture; raised spiral cord along shoulder, often forming weak keel. Three primary spiral cords, adapical of which delimits shoulder, with single secondary intercalated that rapidly increases in strength to become almost equal to primary cords in some specimens. Interspaces between spiral cords slightly narrower than cords. Last whorl relatively slender, attaining ~65% of total height, sharply angled at shoulder delimited by shoulder cord, smooth or with indistinct nodes developed over ribs, subcylindrical below; base convex, strongly constricted; fasciole extraordinarily broad forming deep pseudoumbilicus with very prominent growth lines in fully adult specimens. Spiral sculpture reduced on subsutural ramp, weakly undulating over ribs below shoulder. Aperture narrowly pyriform. Columellar callus forming broad rim, adherent in parietal area, erect over pseudoumbilicus. Columella excavated in upper half, bearing three broad columellar folds on lower half, not visible on apertural view in fully grown specimens. Anal canal weakly incised, accentuated by broad, indistinct parietal denticle. Outer lip thin with numerous lirae starting a short distance from lip edge and extending deep within aperture. Siphonal canal moderately long, straight, narrow.

Discussion. The type of Polygona lynchi derives from the Early Miocene of the northeastern Atlantic. Specimens from the Middle Miocene of the Paratethys differ from the French specimens in the slightly broader shell, the shallower subsutural ramp and the shorter siphonal canal (compare de Basterot 1825: pl. 7, fig. 10 and Peyrot 1928: pl. 7, fig 5). Polygona lynchoides ( Bellardi, 1884) [= Polygona acutecostulata ( Sacco, 1904) ] was described from the Early Miocene of the Proto-Mediterranean Sea, and is characterized by a broad shell, prominent nodes, and coarse spiral sculpture. Herein, we treat Polygona lynchi , as a very variable species and consider the occurrences from the Paratethys and the Proto-Mediterranean Sea as conspecific with the French Atlantic ones.

Paleoenvironment. Shallow marine, inner neritic.

Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): North Alpine-Carpathian Foreland Basin: Grund ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1890); Vienna Basin: Baden-Sooss, Gainfarn ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1890; hoc opus); Pannonian Basin: Letkés ( Hungary) ( Kovács & Vicián 2023); Bükk Mountains: Borsodbóta ( Hungary) ( Csepreghy-Meznerics 1972); Făget Basin: Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania) (Hoernes & Auinger 1890); Dacian Basin: Târnene ( Bulgaria) (Kojumdgieva in Kojumdgieva & Strachimirov 1960).

Proto-Mediterranean Sea. Burdigalian (Early Miocene): Colli Torinesi: Baldissero, Termô-Fôurà, Val Ceppi ( Italy) ( Bellardi 1884; Sacco 1904).

Northeastern Atlantic. Burdigalian (Early Miocene): Aquitaine Basin: Léognan, Saucats, Saint-Paul-lès-Dax ( France) (de Basterot 1825; Peyrot 1928).
