Chileanthicus kingii ( MacLeay, 1872) comb. nov.

( Figs 150–154 View FIGURES 146–154 )

Formicomus Kingii MacLeay, 1872: 306 .

Formicomus mastersii: Lea, 1922: 503 , not King (1869).

Type locality. Australia, SE Queensland, Gayndah .

Redescription (male, syntype, SAMA). Head and pronotum rufous-brown, both partly darkened (head dorsally); elytra largely brown black, lateral margins and suture paler, with two, rufous to yellowish, transverse bands ( Fig. 154 View FIGURES 146–154 ), interrupted on suture, the anterior band widened laterally and touching lateral margins, the posterior band rather evenly narrow; legs, antennae and palpi dark rufous brown, distal portion of femora, especially metafemora, nearly brown-black.

Head 1.3 times as long as wide, widely rounded posteriorly; tempora moderately but distinctly narrowing posteriad; posterior temporal angles less distinct, rounded. Eyes small, moderately convex. Dorsal surface nearly matte, densely puncured ( Fig. 150 View FIGURES 146–154 ); punctation distinctly double, rather evenly dense, at most slightly sparser medially in anterior half. Setation pale to brownish, evenly very short, subdecumbent, with sparsely scattered, inconspicuous, erect setae. Antennae moderately enlarged in terminal third; antennomere III twice as long as wide, slightly longer than IV; antennomere X 1.3 times, antennomere XI twice as long as wide.

Pronotum 1.1 times as long as wide, wider than head including eyes, widely rounded anteriorly; pronotal disc moderately convex, its lateral margins forming rounded edge, lateral outlines slightly sinuously narrowing towards base in dorsal view. Dorsal surface nearly matte; punctation similar to that on head, coarse punctures rather oval. Setation as on head.

Elytra 1.8 times as long as wide, conjointly rounded apically. Surface moderately glossy, distinctly punctured ( Fig. 150 View FIGURES 146–154 ); basal punctation distinctly double, coarse punctures somewhat smaller and sparser than those on head. Setation mostly pale to brownish, evenly directing posteriad; setae on transverse bands whitish/ silvery, somewhat swirled medially, obliquely pointing lateral in posterior band; erect setae scattered, short and inconspicuous.

Metafemora bidentate ( Fig. 151 View FIGURES 146–154 ), conspicuously large, subapical process facing inner and smaller, sharply pointed process facing outer side of tibia; mesotibiae with small denticle on inner side apically; metatibiae strong, moderately arcuate in basal half, their inner apical margin produced into small tooth-like process ( Fig. 152 View FIGURES 146–154 ). Setation rather uniformly short and fine, mostly subdecumbent.

Abdominal sternum VII and tergum VII simple. Sternite VIII ( Fig. 153 View FIGURES 146–154 ); paired prongs widened and strongly lobed distally, their apical portion triangular, bluntly pointed apically. Tergite VIII with posterior margin evenly rounded.

Aedeagus ( Fig. 154 View FIGURES 146–154 ); apical portion of tegmen 1.7 times as long as basal-piece, evenly narrowing towards pointed apex, moderately bent in lateral view; median lobe of aedeagus finely membranous, bilobed, densely spinulose on inner side subapically.

Female. Externally differing from male by simple meso- and metatibiae.

Body length (♂ ♀). 4.4–4.9 mm.

Variation. Some specimens have the head solidly brown black and the pronotum dark brown with a rufous tinge; pale elytral bands can be contrasting or inconspicuous and vaguely outlined; subapical processes of the metafemora are somewhat variable in shape, the larger one mostly narrowed, but sometimes nearly rectangular apically.

Differential diagnosis. C. kingii can be distinguished from most species by the bidentate metafemora, with the large process facing the inner side of the metatibia. The only species with a similar form of the metafemora, C. speciosus (cf. Figs 151 View FIGURES 146–154 , 201 View FIGURES 201–208 ), is quite dissimilar in numerous other characters (see the key, cf. Figs 153, 154 View FIGURES 146–154 and 198, 200 View FIGURES 192–200 ).

Distribution. Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria).

Remarks. Formicomus kingii was described by Macleay (1872) based on an unstated number of specimens from Gayndah in Queensland. Lea (1922) synonymized this species with F. mastersii on the basis of examination of the cotype specimen in the SAMA. This specimen is conspecific with C. kingii , and it does not belong to the types series of C. mastersii (see remarks under this species). Consequently, C. kingii is regarded as a valid species.
