Type species Promacrolaelaps hunteri Costa 1971 .
Diagnosis. Laelapidae with an oval-shaped dorsal shield without lateral incisions, bearing 30-31 pairs of setae, without Zx setae between the J and Z setae, all dorsal shield setae smooth and pointed. Some opisthonotal setae greatly elongated and often appearing wavy in slide-mounted specimens, especially Z4, which is at least three times as long as J5. Sternal shield as wide as long, fused with endopodal plates between coxae II and III. Para-anal setae shorter than unpaired post-anal seta. Hypostomal setae h3 distinctly longer than other hypostomal setae. Epistome irregularly denticulate laterally. Greatly elongated macrosetae present on femora I-IV and genua III-IV. Tarsus II without subterminal blunt spines (al 1 and pl 1 not spine-like).
