Diagnosis

Antenna nine-segmented; OOL 0.5–1 (0.86 ± 0.19, n = 24) as long as diameter of posterior ocellus; pronotum hardly visible in dorsal view; mesoscutum with areolate– rugulose sculpture; notauli incomplete, abbreviate anteriorly, gradually dilated posteriorly; T2 smooth, shiny, glabrous, without visible sculpture, with two large depressions anterolaterally; length of T2 1–1.3 times (1.15 ± 0.08, n = 24) width.

Description

Female: body size: 0.7–1.0 (0.8 ± 0.07, n = 24) mm. Colour: body black; lateral side of first metasomal tergite with brown tint. Antenna: A1–A6 yellow; A7–A9 dark brown. Vein of forewings brown. Legs including coxae yellow.

Head transverse, width 2–2.75 (2.2 ± 0.18, n = 24) times length, 0.94–1.1 (1 ± 0.04, n = 24) times width of mesosoma. In frontal view, height of head 1.2 times width. Vertex and occiput areolate–rugulose. Temple sculptured as the vertex. Compound eye large, glabrous. Width of eye 1.6–3.5 (2.4 ± 0.44, n = 24) times width of temple. Eye height 1–1.6 (1.2 ± 0.13, n = 24) times width of eye. OOL 0.5–1 (0.86 ± 0.19, n = 24) times length of diameter of posterior ocellus. POL 1.6–2 (1.8 ± 0.12, n = 24) times LOL. Frons without frontal depression, sculptured as the vertex and temple. Gena without malar sulcus and not striate, sculptured as temple. Mandible bidentate; palpal formula 1: 1.

Antenna nine-segmented in both sexes.

Antenna in females: length of A1 3.2 times width and 3.8 times length of A2. Length of A2 1.5 times width and 2.2 times length of A3. Width of A3 1.2 times length and equal to width of A4. Length of A3 1.25 times length of A4. A4 transverse, its width 1.5 times length. A5 shortest, transverse, twice as wide as long. A6 as long as A4, its length 1.3 times length of A5, transverse, twice as wide as long. Width of A7 1.4 times length, 1.8 times of A6 and 0.9 times width of A8. Width of A8 1.7 times length and similar to width of A9. Length of A9 1.4 times width and 1.7 times length of A8.

Antenna of male: length of A1 2.8 times width and 3.7 times length of A2. Length of A2 1.3 times width and 1.1 times length of A3. Length of A3 1.1 times width and 2.2 times length of A4. Width of A3 1.3 times width of A4. A4 transverse, 1.5 times as wide as long. A5 as long and as wide as A4. Width of A6 1.6 times length. Width of A7 1.5 times length and 1.5 times width of A6. Length of A7 1.6 times length of A6 and 1.1 times length of A8. Width of A8 1.9 times length. Length of A9 1.3 times width and 1.2 times length of A8.

Mesosoma: length 1–1.2 (1 ± 0.05, n = 24) times width; width 1.4 times height. Pronotum small; mesoscutum with areolate–rugulose sculpture, as that of the head, 1.6–2.6 (2 ± 0.2, n = 24) times longer than scutellum. Notauli incomplete, abbreviate anteriorly, gradually dilated posteriorly. Width of scutellum 2–3.2 (2.4 ± 0.2) times length, strongly flattened, with strong lateral keels, smooth and shiny.

Length of forewing 2.5–3 (2.7 ± 0.1, n = 24) times width, 1.2 times length of hindwing, 2.4–3 (2.9 ± 0.1) times width of mesosoma, surpassing apex of metasoma. Forewings with submarginal vein ending in rounded knob. Length of forewings 7.7 times length of submarginal vein.

Hindwing 4.5 times as long as wide, with two hamuli. Width of hindwing 3.6 times length of marginal fringe at its longest.

Metascutellum weakly defined, hardly visible in dorsal view. Propodeum medially with two short parallel keels, covered with a short, silvery pilosity.

Pronotal groove glabrous; side of pronotum sculptured as mesoscutum, glabrous. Mesopleuron with shallow, smooth and shiny mesopleural depression. In some specimens this depression is reduced. In upper part, below tegula, with parallel ridges (in one specimen these ridges are missing). Sternaulus sculptured as side of pronotum.

Metapleuron covered with thick, short, silvery setae, except a small triangular area in anteromedian part near posterior part of mesopleuron. In some specimens the metapleuron is completely covered with setae.

Metasoma: length 1.3–1.7 (1.5 ± 0.1, n = 24) times length of mesosoma, 1.4–1.8 (1.6 ± 0.1, n = 24) times width; composed of six externally visible tergites. Some of the last four terga may be telescoped under the large T2.

T1 convex, with distinct medial prominence with few, delicate, longitudinal costae, width 2.1–3.2 (2.5 ± 0.2, n = 24) times length, laterally of medial prominence with two depressions. Ratio between maximum and minimum width of T1 1.7–2.4 (1.9 ± 0.18, n = 24).

T2 smooth, shiny, glabrous, without visible sculpture, with two large depressions anterolaterally; length of T2, 3–5 (3.79 ± 0.4, n = 24) times length of T1 and 1–1.3 (1.15 ± 0.08, n = 24) its own width. Ratio between maximum and minimum width of T2 1.17–1.4 (1.3 ± 0.05, n = 24).

Remarks

Fidiobia rugosifrons is the only species of the genus with Holarctic distribution. It is the most common European species of Fidiobia , but is rare in general. It is a very distinct species. The shape of T1 makes this species similar to F. pronotata , but the structure of the mesosoma is completely different in these two species. It differs from F. hofferi in dimensions; sculpture; position of posterior ocellus; shape of T1.
