Type species — Zercon obtusus Koch, 1839  : 27.13, sensu Karg, 1960: 440.

This is the largest grouping of species in the subfamily Amblyseiinae  , with 429 nominal species (Paterson et al., 2017). Chant & McMurtry (2007) stated that the females of this genus are diagnosed as having the dorsal shield lightly sclerotised, usually smooth; ventral shields usually smooth; female ventrianal shield of a variety of shapes, usually pentagonal but sometimes vase-shaped or divided into separate ventral and anal shields, and reduced in a few species so that there are fewer than three pairs of pre-anal setae inserted on the shield; fixed digit of chelicera usually with many teeth; legs II and III, and often leg I as well, with macrosetae; leg I often with a prominent erect seta on the base of the tarsus as well as a macroseta on the genu; spermatheca highly variable in form; males usually with three pairs of pre-anal setae arranged in a triangular pattern. Caudoventral seta ZV3 is variable and is absent in most of the species.
