Type Locality: NE Mongolia, Shaborte (see Pavlinov and Rossolimo, 1987, for additional comments).

Vernacular Names: Campbell's Desert Hamster.

Synonyms: Phodopus crepidatus Hollister 1912 ; Phodopus tuvinicus Orlov and Iskharova 1974 .

Distribution: Transbaikalia in Russia, Mongolia, and adjacent China (W Xinjiang, N Hebei, and N Nei Mongol).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).

Discussion: Included in P. sungorus by some researchers (G. M. Allen, 1940; Corbet, 1978 c; Ellerman, 1941; Ellerman and Morrison-Scott, 1951; Gromov and Erbajeva, 1995; Wang, 2003; Zhang et al., 1997), but regarded as distinct by others ( Musser and Carleton, 1993; Pavlinov and Rossolimo, 1987, 1998; Pavlinov et al., 1995 a). Separation of campbelli is supported by chromosomal differences ( Safronova et al., 1992).
