Type:— INDIA: Darjeeling, J. S. Gamble 9645 (lectotype designated here CAL!; syntypes Sikkim, Rechilla , Unknown Collector s.n. CAL!, G00328837 image!, Tungyen, Brandis 1395 CAL!) .

Piper haridasanii Gajurel, Rethy & Kumar Piper species N. E. India 81. 2008 syn. nov.

Type:— INDIA: Arunachal Pradesh: Durpang Reserve Forest, 31. 5. 1998 P. R. Gajurel 84 (holotype CAL!).

Distribution:— INDIA: Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, West Bengal.

Note:— The types mentioned for P. betleoides are from Darjeeling and Sikkim. Of these, J. S. Gamble 9645 at CAL is designated as the lectotype because it carries both the male and female twigs, conforming to the original description. Piper haridasanii Gajurel, Rethy & Kumar (2001: 293) was published without designation of a type. However, the holotype was designated by the authors in 2008 validating the name thereby. The two species are synonymized here as they are morphologically similar in every respect. This species is closely allied to P. boehmeriifolium (Miq.) Wall. ex C. DC. (869: 348), differing in the semi-coalescent fruits placed in grooves on the rachis.
