COMMENTS: Conservation status and distribution reviewed by Ginsberg and Macdonald (1990). Reviewed by Langguth (1975) and Stains (1975). Revisions by Langguth (1969), Clutton-Brock et al. (1976), Van Gelder (1978), Berta (1987, 1988), Wayne and O'Brien (1987), and Wayne et al. (1987 a, b, 1989) gave little support to the subfamilies recognized by Simpson (1945); therefore, no subfamilies are recognized here. Van Gelder's (1977b) hybridization criteria for generic classification resulted in the recognition of only a few genera, including some paraphyletic groups.
