Stenosigma panamensis Ferreira & Hermes new species

( Figs. 5 View FIGURES 1–6 , 12 View FIGURES 7–12. 7 , 19, 22 View FIGURES 19–24. 19 , 29 View FIGURES 25–30. 25–27 )

Comments and diagnosis. This species is quite similar to S. humerale , S. allegrum and S. quechua , sharing with them the absence of dorsolateral lamella on the pronotal carina ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 19–24. 19 ) and the predominantly black body color ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1–6 ). It differs from S. allegrum by the sparse punctation on the dorsal surface of pronotum ( Figs. 19, 22 View FIGURES 19–24. 19 ) and by the lateral margins of the T1 not touching ventrally, widely separated basally ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 25–30. 25–27 ). Stenosigma panamensis differs from S. quechua and S. humerale by the sharp-cornered pronotal carina (in the form of a “Z”) in the dorsolateral surface of the pronotum ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 19–24. 19 ), and by the clypeal disc of female evenly flat all along, without a sub apical depression ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 7–12. 7 ).

Description. Holotype female. Body length (from head to apex of T1): 13.1 mm; Fore wing length (from mid tegula to apex): 9.5 mm.

Color. Head and mesosoma predominantly blackish, yellow and brown sparse spots. Metasoma bright-brown. Yellow spots as follows: entire mandible, except for margins; broad spots on apex of clypeus; small spots laterally to antennal sockets; spot flanking margin of tegula. Brown spots as follows: edge of compound eye; region posterior to pretegular carina, near dorsal sulcus of mesepisternum; thin band on gena, near posterior margin of compound eye. Apical portion of antenna orange; scape, pedicel and F1 blackish. Coxae and trochanters blackish; base of femur with a broad brown spot; apex of femora, tibiae, tarsi and pre-tarsi yellowish. Wings Brown-hyaline.

Pilosity. Dense golden pubescence on anterior pronotum, mesepisternum, mesoscutum, scutellum, metanotum, and propodeum, denser at apex of the latter. Short and golden bristles less dense on head, legs and metasoma, being fine in the latter.

Sculpture. Clypeus micro-punctation evident, with sparse and shallow large punctures. Frons with sparse punctation; small and deep punctures. Dense punctation from vertex to occiput. Dorsal pronotum with dense punctation, punctures deep and abundant; punctures sparser and obsolete below humeral region. Mesepisternum with sparse and deep punctation. Mesoescutum, scutellum and metanotum with dense punctation, punctures deeper than those of pronotum. Propodeum with dense punctation and deep punctures dorsally, shallower and sparser laterally. Metasoma unpunctured.

Structure. Labrum rounded apically, retracted behind apex of clypeus. Clypeus longer than wide, slightly emarginate apically, almost truncate; short, rounded teeth, with apical carinae not evident; clypeal margins not lamellate. Inter-antennal region cariniform and raised, with basal groove; narrow, smaller than antennal socket. Pronotal carina developed throughout, sinuous and Z-shaped at humerous; humerous projecting; pronotal fovea rounded, nearly occluded by a fold of pronotal carina. Tegula not depressed medially; mesoepisternum with developed dorsal groove, punctured; conspicuous declivity between mesoscutum and scutellum; propodeum with medial projecting carina and evident striation; T1 without basal elevation, rounded preapical fossa; T2 longer than wide, without lamella.

Male. Sexual dimorphism as in most vespids. Antenna with hook-shaped and pointed apical flagellomere, surpassing antipenultimate.

Male genitalia. Apex of aedeagus rounded ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 31–35. 31, 32 ), laterally curved ( Fig. 33 View FIGURES 31–35. 31, 32 ). Digitus with short bristles at apex and well-developed basal protuberances ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 31–35. 31, 32 ).

Etymology. The name refers to the country where the first specimens were reported: Panama.
