Material examined. Brazil: Rio Grande do Sul – Proj. GEDIP, st. 1918, 1 spec. (MZUSP-4613); st. 1919, 3 spec. (MZUSP-7415); 4 spec. (MZUSP-7414).

Diagnosis. Shield varying from slightly broader than long to slightly longer than broad. Rostrum roundly subtriangular, with or without terminal spine. Ocular peduncles more than half length of shield, with corneas slightly dilated; ocular acicles triangular, concave, each with strong submarginal spine. Right cheliped stronger than left; dactyl with double row of corneous-tipped spines on dorsal surface; palm with row of strong corneous-tipped spines on dorsomesial margin; carpus with irregular rows of corneous-tipped spines on dorsal surface. Left cheliped with two irregular rows of corneous-tipped spines on dorsal surface of dactyl proximally, becoming single row distally. Ambulatory legs overreaching chelipeds; dactyls of left and right legs similar, in dorsal view slightly twisted, dorsal surfaces each with double row of corneous-tipped spines. Telson with row of small calcareous spines on inner half of each terminal margin, outer half unarmed.

Distribution. Western Atlantic: Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay and Argentina. Eastern Pacific: Chile.

Habitat. From intertidal to 130 m.

Remarks. McLaughlin & Saint Laurent (1998) established the genus Propagurus , which means “before Pagurus ”, referring to the primitive characters of this genus. The genus is represented in Atlantic Ocean only by Propagurus gaudichaudii .
