Diagnosis

Apetasimus expers is known from a single specimen collected by Rev. Thomas Blackburn in 1883 on Maui. Considered a synonym of A. sordidus by Sharp (Sharp & Scott 1908). Examination of the type indicates affinity with Apetasimus subalatus as well as A. sordidus . All three species have the male anal sclerite sharply attenuate ( Fig. 7 View FIGURE 7. A. A F). Apetasimus expers is similar to A. subalatus in color and collection locality, and to A. sordidus in having fully developed flight wings. The type of A. expers is uniformly pale red, although not appearing teneral, while A. sordidus is dark brown to nearly black with small red markings at humeri ( Sharp & Scott 1908). Length 5.8mm, Width 2.9mm.
