Tabanus lunatus View in CoL is a Mediterranean species, found throughout Europe, the Near and Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa ( Chvála et al. 1972). It was reported from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria ( Theodor 1965; Chvála et al. 1977; Al-Talafha et al. 2005; Abu El-Hassan et al. 2013).
According to Moucha & Chvála (1963) Olsufjev first described Tabanus bactrianus Olsufjev 1937 View in CoL as a subspecies under lunatus View in CoL . Abbassian-Lintzen (1962) considered bactrianus View in CoL a variant of T. kermani View in CoL . However, Moucha & Chvála (1963), Abbassian- Lintzen (1964), Chvála et al. (1972) treated bactrianus View in CoL as accepted name and granted full specific level.
