Dasyrhamphis nigritus (Fabricius, 1794) View in CoL

This species was known under the name Tabanus alexandrinus Wiedemann 1830 ( Theodor 1965). Moreover, D. nigritus was erroneously used in the literature for D. carbonarius . Revision of Fabricius’s materials and descriptions by Chvála & Lyneborg (1970) lead to designate a lectotype for Tabanus nigrita and now it is correctly identified as D. nigritus . The species is distributed through southern and eastern Mediterranean regions from Morocco to Turkey ( Müller et al. 2012c). In Europe it was collected from France, Spain, and Italy ( Chvála et al. 1972). However, Chvála et al. (1972) indicated the need for verification of the species occurrence. In the Arab countries of the Middle East, it was reported from Palestine and Syria ( Müller et al. 2012c).
