Hesperoptenus doriae View in CoL

French: Sérotine de Doria / German: Doria-Scheinbreitfliigel / Spanish: Hesperopteno de Doria

Other common names: False Serotine Bat, Peters'’s False Serotine

Taxonomy. Vesperus (Hesperoptenus) doriae Peters, 1869 View in CoL ,

Sarawak, Borneo, Malaysia.

Subgenus Hesperoptenus (one species). Until recently, only three species of Hesperoptenus were included in any molecular-phylogenetic study. C. M. Francis and colleagues in 2010, using DNA barcodes, discovered H. tickelli and H. blanfordi in different clades of Vespertilioninae , but A. Hassanin and colleagues in 2018 recovered them as sister species, most closely related to Glauconycteris and Arielulus . Current content of Hesperoptenus , as presented here, needs critical revision based on morphology and genetics to determine if it is monophyletic. Monotypic.

Distribution. Peninsular Malaysia and W Borneo ( Sarawak). View Figure

Descriptive notes. Head-body 51 mm, tail 40 mm, ear 15 mm (one specimen), forearm 38-41 mm; weight 8-2-8-3 g. Females (forearm 38-8— 41 mm) might be larger than males (forearm 38-39 mm). Doria’s False Serotine strongly resembles Eptesicus and Pipistrellus , and like them, its baculum is long-shafted. Upperparts are yellowish brown, paler on head and darker on rump. Hair bases are dark, with buffy middle zone. Underparts are dark brownish gray. Flight membranes are dark brown. Edge of ears, tragus, and ring around eyes are orange. Ears are very short, rounded, and membranous. Tragus is slightly hatched-shaped and pointed forward. Second phalanx of third digit is markedly longer than first phalanx. Baculum is long and slender, with paired basal lobes and flattened ventrally fluted shaft with unmodified rounded tip. Braincase is slightly inflated, rather globose; rostrum is not particularly wide; and supraorbital region is only lightly inflated. Dental formula for all species of Hesperoptenus is12/3,C1/1,P1/2,M 3/3 (x2) = 32. I*is large and conical, and I’ is slightly displaced inward but still separating I* from C'. Condylo-canine lengths are 13-2-13-7 mm, and maxillary tooth row lengths are 4-5—4-6 mm.

Habitat. Lowland localities. Doria’s False Serotines, Large False Serotines (H. tomes), and Blanford’s False Serotines ( FH. blanfordi ) in Ulu Gombak, Peninsular Malaysia, were caught over a stream orits tributary at an elevation of 260 m.

Food and Feeding. No information.

Breeding. No information.

Activity patterns. In Ulu Gombak, Doria’s False Serotine roosted on leaves of a palm tree by the side of a forest stream. It also reportedly roosts in overhanging rocks.

Movements, Home range and Social organization. Doria’s False Serotine roosts in small colonies of up to ten individuals.

Status and Conservation. Classified as Data Deficient on The IUCN Red List, as it is known from only a few specimens. It is known from Ulu Gombak, a protected forest reserve.
